If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders.  Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea”.

Hi and welcome to our class website!  I love the quote from de Saint-Exupery because it captures my belief that learning happens when there is curiosity, purpose, meaning and joy.  I love sparking kids’ curiosity, building confidence, and being a part of a joyful learning community!  Creating a classroom where children grow IMG_20140220_120705in their confidence to embrace challenges, collaborate with each other and allow themselves to be driven by curiosity are strong personal teaching goals for me.  I am very passionate about developing creative and varied approaches to ensure that kids are challenged and on the path to success every day!

I have taught in Los Angeles, Kansas City, and Nashville.  I have 10 years of experience teaching middle school science: by far the best subject on the planet!   Before discovering teaching, I ran a small certified organic vegetable farm for a few years and prior to that, I worked as a scientist on environmental problems, including trying to protect the little wild spaces left in urban areas.  My background includes a B.S. in Biology and an M.A. in Environmental Planning from UCLA and my teaching credentials come from Central Missouri State University.

In my spare time, I love traveling, gardening, and hiking.  I have been so fortunate to have studied abroad (field biology in Costa Rica and university in Germany) and to have travelled a lot internationally (I spent one year traveling from Istanbul to Beijing).  My international experiences have greatly shaped who I am.   I also love being outdoors: working in my garden and exploring Tennessee’s beautiful mountains !  I look forward to an awesome year!
